Vocational Education Assistance

Overview
Huna Heritage Foundation provides supplemental financial assistance for Vocational Education and Apprenticeship programs for eligible persons. To be funded, training should lead to opportunities for gainful employment.

Vocational Education applications are reviewed by and awards are made by the Huna Heritage Foundation Board of Trustees.

Eligibility
To be eligible for Vocational Education or Apprenticeship program funding, you must:
  • Be a Huna Totem Shareholder or descendant.
  • Be unemployed or underemployed. Applicant must be in need of training in order to be employable. Applicants who are underemployed must show how the lack of additional training would result in hardship.
  • Be at least 18 years of age. High school students are eligible at age 17.
  • If eligible, apply to the agency which is contracted with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to provide Vocational Education funding assistance.
Other Requirements:
  • Employment should be available at the completion of training.
  • Vocational Education courses must be approved by a National Accreditation Association or by the Alaska Department of Education's Division of Vocational Education
  • The training course must be full-time. Full-time training consists of 30 hours of study per week and includes shop practices as an integral component.
  • Apprenticeship programs must be approved by the U.S. Bureau of Apprenticeship Training.
Generally, Huna Heritage Foundation Vocational Education Assistance grants are awarded only once to an applicant. A second award may be considered if an applicant demonstrates he/she continues to be unemployed, underemployed or unable to work in their primary occupation due to physical or other disability.
