Glacier Bay Youth Trip
On May 5, 2011, The Glacier Bay National Park Service partnered with the Huna Heritage Foundation, the Hoonah Indian Association and the Hoonah City Schools to produce the annual youth cultural trip into Glacier Bay. Over 50 students from the Hoonah Schools – grades 5 – 8 were joined by tribal elders, school staff and NPS
cultural / education officers to learn about the history, stories and songs of Glacier Bay. Lesson plans in cedar bark weaving, wildlife of Glacier Bay, glacier geology, Tlingit language and traditional Tlingit artwork were conducted on board enriching the student’s knowledge of the traditional homeland.
The trip was further enhanced by community members, clan leaders and clan elders such as Jennie Lindoff, Anita Lafferty, Ken Grant, Ernie & Lillian Hillman, Bill Wilson, Harlena Warford and Lily & Jake White all of whom provided traditional knowledge, clan songs and stories throughout the day’s journey for the Hoonah students.
